Hoje conversamos com Ibim Cookey.
Ibim é um artista de desenhos realistas, natural da Nigéria. Graduado em arquitetura. Ganhou vários prêmios. É embaixador no Ministério da Cultura e Turismo do estado de River State. Seus trabalhos são realizados principalmente com lápis grafite e carvão sobre papel. Participou de várias exposições internacionais. Ibim é conhecido por explorar retratos de africanos em uma ampla gama de emoções cotidianas e sociabilidade.
1- Como você entrou no mundo da arte?
Comecei a desenhar quando criança, na escola. Eram basicamente desenhos a lápis que toda criança adoraria fazer. Continuei desenhando no ensino médio. Comecei a desenhar histórias em quadrinhos. Posso dizer que foi então que percebi que realmente nasci para arte, mas não estava tão certo sobre meu talento ou estilo até 2016. Eu estava na universidade quando me deparei com alguns retratos online, fui atraído pelas características do corpo humano. Tomei a decisão de adotar esse aspecto como foco da minha arte. Continuei praticando e insistindo, não foi fácil mas sou grato por não ter desistido.
2- Como você desenvolveu o seu estilo artístico?
Desenvolvi meu estilo atual experimentando lápis grafite, lápis de carvão e tinta acrílica. Usei-os para ilustrar o rosto humano, suas formas e expressões ao mesmo tempo em que eu coloria os fundos para destacar os atributos e características do indivíduo.
3- Como funciona o seu processo criativo e quais são suas inspirações artísticas?
Eu trabalho com música. Me inspiro no meu povo, na raça negra e em tudo que nos envolve: emoções, paixões, lutas. Procuro expressá-los com muita elegância e ousadia. Acredito que meu único objetivo é dar voz a eles por meio da arte. Minha crença na nossa força é o suficiente para me inspirar e seguir em frente.
4- Qual é a principal mensagem da sua arte?
A mensagem da minha arte é o que chamo de Afro Emotional Fusion. Isso porque minha arte passa uma mensagem através dos sentimentos cotidianos dos negros. É evidente em minhas obras que mil palavras podem ser lidas a partir das expressões em seus rostos. Você pode ver nossa luta em seus olhos, assim como a força e a coragem para superar os desafios.
5- Qual foi o principal desafio que você encontrou no início de sua carreira?
O primeiro desafio foi na aquisição de materiais. A Nigéria infelizmente é um dos piores países para se viver como artista. É muito difícil obter os materiais, preciso importar de outros países.
O meu segundo desafio foi ser ouvido como um jovem africano. Já havia um estilo pré-existente no mercado da arte. Impressionismo, arte figurativa e outros tipos de arte contemporânea. Fazer com que a minha arte fosse reconhecida era um grande desafio, principalmente com poucas galerias de arte disponíveis para eu começar. Embora a Nigéria tenha um mercado de arte próspero hoje, a arte ainda não é apreciada como deveria. Nós, jovens, temos poucas oportunidades em comparação com artistas mais experientes.
6- Você tem artistas na sua família? Qual foi o papel deles na sua relação com a arte?
Eu sou o único artista da minha família. Eles me apoiaram muito e sou grato por isso. Minha família sempre me deu apoio e o meu amor por eles se manifesta em minhas obras. O amor e apoio familiar me dão essa sensação de euforia para aumentar minha criatividade.
7- Que mensagem você deixaria pra quem está começando agora?
Eu diria para você ser verdadeiro consigo mesmo e entender que cada um é único em sua própria maneira. Não tente copiar ninguém. Expresse originalidade em tudo que você faz porque a arte é basicamente sobre contar a sua própria história. Não há necessidade de ver seus colegas como concorrentes, mas sim como alguém que você pode aprender e crescer junto. O seu maior concorrente deve ser você mesmo. O céu é grande o suficiente para todos nós brilharmos.
O segredo é trabalhar muito e ter consistência é isso o que vai te distinguir da média. Seja paciente e aproveite cada degrau do processo.

Today we talk to Ibim Cookey. Cookey is a Photo Realistic Pencil Artist who comes from Nigeria. He is A graduate of Architecture and Also A Multi Award Winning Artist and An Art Ambassador to the Rivers state Ministry of Culture and Tourism. His works Are primary Done with Graphite and Charcoal pencils on paper and his Artworks have been linked with various international exhibitions. He uses his Art to preach about social injustice and social structure especially in the western part of Africa where he resides.
1- How did you get into the art world?
I started drawing years back in my elementary school, it was basically pencil drawings that every little child would love to do. It continued in high school when I started drawing comics. I can say that it was then I discovered I was drawn to art but I wasn’t so serious about my talent or the particular style I use now until 2016. I was in my second year in the university when I stumbled on some portraits online, I was drawn to the features of the human body. I made a decision that I would take up that aspect of art. I kept on practicing and pushing. It wasn’t easy. I focused on that and I’m glad I did.
2- How did you develop your artistic style?
I developed my current artistic style by experimenting with graphite pencils, charcoal pencil and acrylic paint, I used them to illustrate human face in their forms and characters, whilst painting colored backgrounds to show the bold attributes and elegant of the individual.
3-) How does your creative process work?
I work with music. I am inspired by my people, the black race. Everything that involves us: the emotions, the passion, the struggles. I’m trying to express them in their elegance and boldness. I believe my sole aim is to give a voice to them through art. My belief in our strength is enough to inspire me to keep on going.
4- What are your artistic inspirations and what is the main message of your art?
The message of my art is Afro Emotional fusion. This is literally because my art tends to pass a message by showcasing the everyday emotions of black people, It’s evident in my works. A thousand words can be read from the expressions on their faces. I’ll keep on saying this, regardless of the fact that you can see the struggles in their eyes: the strength surpasses it.
5- What was the main challenge you faced at the beginning of your artistic career?
The first challenge I faced was acquisition of materials. Nigeria is sadly one of worst countries to live in as an artist. It’s very difficult to get certain materials because they are unavailable, I usually export them from the western parts of the world.
The second challenge was being heard as a Young African Boy. There was a preexisting style in the art market. Impressionism, figurative art and other types of contemporary art and the Herculean task of getting my art recognized was something that dampened my spirit. Considering the fact that we had very few galleries to start with. Although, Nigeria has a thriving art market now and some of those issues have been rectified, art is not appreciated as it should be. The young persons like myself get little or no opportunity compared to the advanced and elderly artists but then it’s slowly becoming better because there’s a high demand for young contemporary artists.
I’m part of the movement advocating for this. It’s a privilege.
6- Do you have artists in your family? What was the role of your relatives in your relationship with the art?
I am the only artist in my family. My family had been very supportive and I’m grateful. They’ve been there, watched me grow and I must confess that the love I’ve been shown is manifested in my works because I can see the tremendous changes in my artworks. The support gives me this euphoric feeling to unlock more creativity.
7- What message would you leave for an aspirant?
I would say you should be true to yourself and understand you are unique in your own way. Do not try to copy but express originality in everything you do because art is basically about your own exclusive story. The focus should be on yourself and there’s no need to view other artists as competitors but colleagues you can learn from, this helps in unlocking greater potentials. Your greatest competition should be yourself. The sky is big enough for all of us to shine.
The key is hardwork and consistency, that’s what distinguishes one from the average. Be patient and enjoy the process.
